Why the panchang sunrise differs from the news
Newspapers print the upper limb of the Sun with refraction; the almanac counts the disc's centre on the true horizon, about three minutes later. The Hindu weekday, the tithi of the day, rāhu kāla and every hora are measured from that almanac sunrise, so that is the one shown here.
Moonrise and moonset
Shown the same way — disc centre, no refraction — which is how the printed panchang and drikpanchang report them.
Common questions
Why is the sunrise here a few minutes after my weather app?
Different convention: the almanac uses the Sun's centre without atmospheric refraction. It is the sunrise the Hindu day is counted from.
Why does moonrise sometimes not appear?
About once a month the Moon does not rise between one sunrise and the next; the table then shows only the events that occur.
Which day is a Hindu day?
From one almanac sunrise to the next. A birth at 3 a.m. on a Tuesday belongs, by vāra, to Monday.
