What a nakshatra is
The Moon's path is divided into 27 mansions of 13°20′ each. The one the Moon sat in at your birth is your janma nakshatra. It names the deity, the yoni, the gaṇa used in matching, and — through its lord — the daśā running at your birth.
The four pādas
Each nakshatra has four quarters. The pāda fixes the Moon's navāṁśa sign and is why two people with the same star can read differently.
Common questions
What is the nakshatra lord?
Each star is ruled by one of nine planets in a fixed cycle (Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury). Your birth star's lord is the first mahādaśā of your life.
Why does the pāda matter?
It sets the Moon's navāṁśa sign and the naming syllable in the old convention. Matching tables also read it.
Does birth time matter for the nakshatra?
Somewhat: the Moon crosses a nakshatra in about a day, and a pāda in about six hours.
