What the lagna is
Every two hours a new sign rises in the east. The one rising when you were born is the lagna — the first house, the frame every other house hangs from. It is the most time-sensitive fact in a kundali.
Why the place matters too
The rising sign depends on where the horizon is. Two babies born at the same minute in Chennai and Toronto have different lagnas. The calculator solves the horizon for your birthplace's coordinates.
Common questions
How accurate must the birth time be?
To the minute if you can. The lagna changes sign roughly every two hours, and near a boundary a few minutes move it. The result shows the degree so you can judge the margin.
What is the lagna lord?
The planet that rules the rising sign — Mars for Aries, Venus for Taurus, and so on. Its placement and strength colour the whole chart.
Is this the same as my rising sign in Western astrology?
Same idea, different zodiac. This is the sidereal (Lahiri) lagna, which is what a Vedic chart uses.
