How Rāhu kāla is found
The day from sunrise to sunset is divided into eight equal parts. Which part belongs to Rāhu depends on the weekday: the 8th on Sunday, the 2nd on Monday, the 7th on Tuesday, the 5th on Wednesday, the 6th on Thursday, the 4th on Friday, the 3rd on Saturday. Because it is a fraction of the actual daylight, it shifts with the season and the city.
What it is for
Tradition avoids beginning important work in Rāhu kāla — journeys, signings, ceremonies. Work already begun is not affected. Yamagaṇḍa and Gulika are the two companion windows, read the same way.
Common questions
Is Rahu Kaal the same everywhere?
No. It is a slice of your city's daylight, so it depends on your sunrise and sunset. Delhi and Chennai differ by many minutes on the same day.
Which sunrise is used?
The almanac convention — the Sun's disc centre on the true horizon — which is also what fixes the Hindu weekday (vāra).
Should I avoid everything in Rahu Kaal?
Only beginnings. Routine work, and anything already under way, carries on.
