Why the Moon, not the Sun
Vedic astrology reads a person from the Moon's sign — the rāśi. It sets the daśā clock, the transits that matter, the gochara of Saturn and Jupiter that everyone asks about. The 'star sign' in magazines is the tropical Sun sign; it is a different sky, roughly 24° apart, and often a different answer.
How exact does the time need to be
The Moon moves about 13° a day, so it changes sign every two and a quarter days. Most births are safely inside a sign; near a boundary the hour matters, and the calculator uses your exact time and place for that reason.
Common questions
Is my Moon sign the same as my zodiac sign?
Usually not. Western zodiac signs are the tropical Sun sign; the Vedic rāśi is the sidereal Moon sign. Both are computed here from the same ephemeris, but the Moon sign is the one a Jyotishi means.
What if I don't know my birth time?
The Moon changes sign only every ~2.25 days, so a rough time is often enough for the sign — but not for the nakshatra pāda or the lagna. Enter your best estimate; the result tells you the Moon's degree so you can see how close to a boundary it was.
